What is the Paparoa and Pike 29 Memorial Track?

A pristine wilderness trail on Blackball’s back doorstep, the Paparoa Track and Pike 29 Memorial Track was mapped out by a small team, lead by trail designer Hamish Seaton. Choosing the best route involved months of walking the hills through areas inaccessible to all but the hardiest.

It is the only Great Walk purpose built for trampers and mountain bikers. The 55 kilometre track traverses the Paparoas from Blackball to Punakaiki with a link to the Pike River mine site soon to open Beginning at the Blackball end, on the existing Croesus Track, with its fascinating mining history and relics, the track’s luxuriant beech and podocarp forest gives way to the open tops of alpine scrub and tussock, just before the Ces Clark hut.

Crossing the exposed tops you are soon rewarded with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps, the Tasman Sea, Lake Brunner and on a clear day, Mt Cook. Expect stunning sunsets. It passes towering escarpments alongside the Pike basin before descending to the west off the Paparoa Range. Near Punakaiki the track follows the historic pack track through beech forest interspersed with northern rata beneath the majestic limestone cliffs of the Pororari gorge, before it emerges into the coastal forest through glades of nikau palms.

The track, an initiative of the Pike River families, is the families' thank you to New Zealanders for the support given to them. It provides an enduring memorial to the 29 men who lost their lives in the 2010 disaster.
